A Horrible Business (Chapter 28)
In this chapter you get a look behind the scenes at what happens in the Brothels. Girls are kidnapped and drugged. At this point, they are either to high or passed out and get raped. Some of the women are their because it is all they can do to support their family, like Marija. It is a horrible and cruel life that people are forced into. At the end of the Chapter Jurgis goes to a political meeting, and hears views about how the Socialist party can help rid of the problems of the packing industry.
Reunited Family (Chapter 27)
In this chapter Jurgis doesn't leave town. He can't find a job and begs for food all the time. He finds that Marija is now a prostitute to support the family. She said that if Jurgis had let Ona be a Prostitute that she could have taken care of the family. This is because Jurgis would never have gone to jail, and the never would have been blacklisted. They would have continued their life, and kept making house payments and eventually gotten by.
The Scab (Chapter 26)
Jurgis's job is now to help the packing plants keep running. When a strike happens Jurgis goes to Mike Scully and asks what he should do. Scully tells him to keep working, and that he needs to wait for another political position because he is now known as a Republican. Jurgis eventually gets promoted. During the strike Jurgis can't leave the yards, so food, beer, and prostitutes are brought in. Jurgis goes to sleep with one of the prostitutes and runs into Connor again. He attacks Connor, but Connor is high on mike Scullies list of helpers. The pay Jurgis' bail, but take his money to do so, and tell him to leave town.
A Life of Crime (Chapter 25)
In this chapter Jurgis begins to mug people in this chapter Him and Jack Duane do so near a bar were they pay the owner to not report them. Jack Duane eventually introduces Jurgis to a politician who pays Jurgis to help him gather votes,

The Other Side (Chapter 24)
In this chapter, Jurgis gets to see what the wealthy live like. Freddie has a massive wad of cash on him. Jurgis thinks about stealing it, but decides not to. Freddie hands Jurgis $100 and they go to Freddie's house. The Butler doesn't like Jurgis, and as soon as Freddie falls asleep, kicks Jurgis out.
The Return (Chapter 23)
After Jurgis returns he find work helping build a subway. He rents a house to stay in and avoids his family. One day, he is hit by a rail car and wakes up in the hospital with a broken arm. He is now out of work and needs to beg for money. He also bar hops to stay war in the winters.
Followed by Guilt (Chapter 22)
Jurgis ran from home and started to live like a tramp. He enjoyed not answering to anyone and having no responsibility. He also enjoys not having to save money. One night, he goes into a town and stays with a prostitute. He wakes up the next morning feeling guilty. He tries to shake his guilty conscience but can't and eventually realizes that he has wrong his family in leaving.
