Workers Strike (Chapter 11)

This movie clip is from Ocean's 13, they strike on a dice factory to get high wages and better working conditions. In the first couple of pages it explains how the factory owner drove down wages. Marija goes on a strike, which is quickly shut down because of threats to bring in new workers. She also has a problem at the bank that makes her have to withdraw all of her money from the bank.

A Money Problem (Chapter 10)

Living in a society where talking about money could get you in trouble would be harsh. The fact that if the wrong ears heard it you could get fired, or make less money, or be forced to work more for the same pay would be hard. It would also be hard always living from pay check to pay check, never having anything to fall back on in case of disaster, especially the common one of losing a job. This life style that Jurgis and the family faces everyday does not sound fun.

A Corrupt Buisness (Chapter 9)

The business men used any means they could to make more money, some of which were very cruel. They had no care for the people who worked for them, and abused them every time they could. Some examples were never cleaning the slaughterhouses, causing unsanitary conditions. They also worked the men through injury or being so tired.

Working for the Church (Chapter 8)

In the factories the would only get paid for an hour if they worked the full hour. They also would lose an hour's pay if they were one minute late. On top of this, the people would have to stand around waiting for work, and they wouldn't get paid for that either. I can relate to this with a job I had two summers ago. We were building tarps for wheat and pea trucks. Towards the end of the summers I would have to sit around, and eventually would get sent home because we had no work. The person this affect the most was Marija because of the lack of work, her canning factory shut down.

Another! (Chapter 7)

This meme is fitting because it talks about what the employers did to a sick or injured employee. The would feel like Thor's cup. Thrown out and their lifestyle shattered because the no longer had a income.

Kids at Work (Chapter 6)

My opinion on kids working in the factories is that they shouldn't be. The kids need to have an education and enjoy playing with other kids, not working. It also impairs the society as a whole, because our next generation is not being brought up in way to futher our country. They won't have a education to help them make new discoveries and invent new technologies that help the future of the country as a whole.

On the Job (Chater 5)

Getting a job was valuable to Jurgis. It meant his family was going to be able to live in america. It was the goal of Jurgis's life. He had to work hard in order to keep his job though. For the people that don't it means starvation for their family. They could also lose their home.

Jurgis Job (Chapter 4)

Jurgis was so excited to be making 17 and a half cents, because it gave him a way to provide for his family without having to have everyone work. He was able to have Ona and Teta Elzbieta stay home and take care of the house. His job was to sweep up entrails in to a bin, and make sure it stayed closed so no one fell in. If I were in Jurgis's spot I would be happy that I could provide for my family. It must have made him happy to take care of his people.

The Veseliya (Chapter 1)

The Veseliya is a ritual dance held at a wedding. The guests create a ring and the bride is in the middle. The guest take turns dancing with the bride; and when they are done, they give a small amount of money to the family to help them start their life and pay for the parties expenses, about $300. In The Jungle Jurgis and Ona don't have enough to come close to paying the party, much less take some home. Many guests eat the meal, and drink to their hearts content, then leave before the Veseliya. Jurgis now will have to work extra to help pay for the party, and support his family. This creates much stress for Jurgis as the cost of the party is more than a years wages for most people.
