A Horrible Business (Chapter 28)

In this chapter you get a look behind the scenes at what happens in the Brothels. Girls are kidnapped and drugged. At this point, they are either to high or passed out and get raped. Some of the women are their because it is all they can do to support their family, like Marija. It is a horrible and cruel life that people are forced into. At the end of the Chapter Jurgis goes to a political meeting, and hears views about how the Socialist party can help rid of the problems of the packing industry.

Reunited Family (Chapter 27)

In this chapter Jurgis doesn't leave town. He can't find a job and begs for food all the time. He finds that Marija is now a prostitute to support the family. She said that if Jurgis had let Ona be a Prostitute that she could have taken care of the family. This is because Jurgis would never have gone to jail, and the never would have been blacklisted. They would have continued their life, and kept making house payments and eventually gotten by.

The Scab (Chapter 26)

Jurgis's job is now to help the packing plants keep running. When a strike happens Jurgis goes to Mike Scully and asks what he should do. Scully tells him to keep working, and that he needs to wait for another political position because he is now known as a Republican. Jurgis eventually gets promoted. During the strike Jurgis can't leave the yards, so food, beer, and prostitutes are brought in. Jurgis goes to sleep with one of the prostitutes and runs into Connor again. He attacks Connor, but Connor is high on mike Scullies list of helpers. The pay Jurgis' bail, but take his money to do so, and tell him to leave town.

A Life of Crime (Chapter 25)

In this chapter Jurgis begins to mug people in this chapter Him and Jack Duane do so near a bar were they pay the owner to not report them. Jack Duane eventually introduces Jurgis to a politician who pays Jurgis to help him gather votes,

The Other Side (Chapter 24)

In this chapter, Jurgis gets to see what the wealthy live like. Freddie has a massive wad of cash on him. Jurgis thinks about stealing it, but decides not to. Freddie hands Jurgis $100 and they go to Freddie's house. The Butler doesn't like Jurgis, and as soon as Freddie falls asleep, kicks Jurgis out.

The Return (Chapter 23)

After Jurgis returns he find work helping build a subway. He rents a house to stay in and avoids his family. One day, he is hit by a rail car and wakes up in the hospital with a broken arm. He is now out of work and needs to beg for money. He also bar hops to stay war in the winters.

Followed by Guilt (Chapter 22)

Jurgis ran from home and started to live like a tramp. He enjoyed not answering to anyone and having no responsibility. He also enjoys not having to save money. One night, he goes into a town and stays with a prostitute. He wakes up the next morning feeling guilty. He tries to shake his guilty conscience but can't and eventually realizes that he has wrong his family in leaving.

No Heroes Here (Chapter 21)

You always hear stories of people risking there lives to save others. In the case of Jurgis and the steel mill, that is not the case. You could lose your life or job way to easily trying to save others. They just avoided helping people who it was already to late, or even if they could save them, but there was too much risk.

A Great Job... or Not (Chapter 20)

In this chapter, Jurgis fnds work at Harvester Truck. They take extremely good care of the employees and have a really nice facility. At the end though, the season dies down and Harvester Truck shuts down until further notice.

Two More Bottles of Wine (Chapter 19)

The person in this song and Jurgis have one thing in common, they drink away there problems.

Released (Chapter 18)

When Jurgis got out of Jail he was at first given wrong directions. Then someone helped him get to town, but he had to walk all the way home, just to find his house had been sold. This must have been crushing to see his family lost all of there hard earned work.

Swindlers of Millions (Chapter 17)

The men in jail where their because they had stole so that they may survive another day. They did what they felt necessary in order to eat another meal. The "Swindlers and thieves of millions were the bosses and owners of the factories who abused the workers to make millions. These bosses were worse than the thieves in jail, they just were able to mask their horrible acts with their money.

The Anguish of Regret (Chapter 16)

Jurgis is now in jail in this chapter. At first, he doesn't care about it, he is happy that the boss is in the hospital. But as he thinks on these things the tragedy of his situation hits him. He has abandoned his family. They now don't have the means to feed themselves, or pay for the house. He realizes the impact this has on his family and is filled with regret. He has nothing to do in jail as these thoughts continue to torture him. they well up and build inside of him until he his filled with anguish about what he did.

The Straw that Broke the Camel's Back (Chapter 15)

The workers are constantly getting abused. The bosses and people who own the mills don't care one bit about their workers. They have abused Jurgis and their family in the work place, and in this chapter we found out about more horrible crimes. Ona's boss has sexually abused her, and Jurgis was enraged. Ona feared saying anything because she new Jurgis would kill him, and be in jail cause of it, as well as that the boss would make it so they couldn't have jobs. He attacked the boss and end's up being arrested. I honestly can't blame Jurgis because my actions would be the same if this happened to my family.

A Charged Issue: Children in Cobalt Mines (Chapter 14)

This website is news coverage by CBS of the discovery of Children working in Cobalt Mines in the Congo. In The Jungle we see some of the young kids in the family, down to age 10, have to leave school to get work in order to help provide for the family. The kids in these cobalt mines do the same. The working conditions for the kids in these mines is intense manual labor, just like many of the jobs at the meat packing plants. The kids at the cobalt mine also get beat, or fired if they aren't "working hard enough".

The worst job rated on this website is a taxi driver. I would fully agree. Taxi drivers don't make much money, have to deal with horrible traffic, and passengers can be annoying. The market is also disappearing with Uber and Lyft now around.

A Rough Spot (Chapter 12)

Jurgis gets injured and has to abandon work to heal. This puts lots of strain on the family. Two more kids are pulled from school to work and sell news papers to help raise money and pay expenses. It also put emotional strain on the family as he became distant, and would beat the kids. It cause an huge struggle for the family to survive.
